How to Keep Your Bedcover Beautiful for Years
A VelvetShield bedcover is built to last. But like anything
worth having, it rewards a little care. Follow these simple
instructions and your cover will stay as rich, vibrant, and
soft as the day it arrived.

WASHING
## Machine Wash — Recommended Method
Temperature: Cold water only (30°C maximum)
Hot water weakens the waterproof layer and
can cause velvet fibres to mat and flatten.
Cycle: Gentle / Delicate cycle
A standard or heavy cycle puts unnecessary
stress on the quilted stitching over time.
Load: Wash alone or with similar colours only
Velvet picks up lint from other fabrics easily.
Wash your VelvetShield cover on its own when
possible, or with other bedding of similar
dark or light tones.
Inside Out: Always turn the cover inside-out before
washing. This protects the velvet surface
from friction and preserves colour vibrancy
for longer.
Detergent: Use a mild, liquid detergent
Powder detergents can leave residue in the
velvet pile. Avoid detergents with bleach
agents or optical brighteners — these
degrade the waterproof layer over time.

## What to AVOID When Washing
✗ No bleach — ever. Even diluted bleach will
permanently damage the waterproof layer and
discolour the velvet.
✗ No fabric softener. Softener coats the velvet
fibres and reduces their natural texture over
time. Your VelvetShield will stay soft without it.
✗ Do not wring or twist the fabric. The quilted
structure can warp under the stress of wringing.
Gently press excess water out instead.
✗ Do not wash with items that have zips, hooks,
or rough surfaces — these can snag the velvet.

## Hand Washing — If Preferred
Fill a basin or bathtub with cold water. Add a small
amount of mild liquid detergent and mix gently.
Submerge the bedcover and press it gently through the
water — do not scrub or rub. Allow to soak for
10 – 15 minutes.
Drain the water and refill with clean cold water.
Press the cover gently to rinse. Repeat until the
water runs clear.
Do not wring. Press excess water out by folding
the cover against the side of the basin, then lay
it flat.

DRYING
## Preferred Method — Air Dry Flat
Lay the cover flat on a clean dry surface or drying rack
in a well-ventilated space. Smooth it out with your hands
to reshape while still damp.
Avoid hanging the cover over a single line while wet —
the weight of wet velvet can stretch the fabric at the
hanging point and distort the shape.
Keep out of direct sunlight when drying. Sunlight
accelerates colour fading in velvet fabrics.
Allow to dry completely before folding and storing.
Storing while even slightly damp can lead to mildew.
## Tumble Dryer — Low Heat Only
If you must use a dryer, use the lowest heat setting
only. Remove the cover while still slightly damp and
lay flat to finish air drying.
Do not dry on high heat. High heat will:
— Flatten the velvet pile permanently
— Degrade the waterproof membrane
— Cause shrinkage in the quilted sections

IRONING & STEAMING
## Ironing
Ironing velvet directly is not recommended. The weight
and heat of an iron will crush and permanently flatten
the velvet pile.
If you must iron, turn the cover inside-out and use
the lowest steam setting available. Iron the reverse
(cotton/backing) side only.
## Steaming — Recommended
A handheld garment steamer is the best way to refresh
your VelvetShield cover between washes and remove any
light creases.
Hold the steamer several centimetres away from the
surface and steam in downward strokes. Never press
the steamer head directly against the velvet.
After steaming, brush gently in one direction with
a soft-bristle brush or clean dry cloth to restore
the velvet pile direction.

STAIN REMOVAL
## Act Quickly
The waterproof layer gives you an advantage — liquids
sit on the surface for a short time rather than
absorbing immediately. Act fast.
1. Blot — do not rub. Use a clean dry cloth or
paper towel to lift the liquid from the surface.
Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper
into the pile.
1. Work from the outside of the stain inward
to avoid spreading.
1. Apply a small amount of cold water and mild
soap to the area. Blot again. Repeat until
the stain lifts.
1. Allow the area to air dry fully before
assessing whether a full wash is needed.
## Specific Stains
FOOD / DRINK: Blot immediately. Cold water and mild
soap. Do not use hot water — it sets
most food stains permanently.
GREASE / OIL: Sprinkle a small amount of talcum
powder or cornstarch on the stain.
Allow to sit for 15 minutes to absorb
the oil. Brush gently, then treat
with mild soap and cold water.
INK: Dab with a small amount of isopropyl
alcohol on a cotton bud. Work gently
from the edges inward. Do not saturate
the fabric.
BLOOD: Cold water only — never warm or hot.
Blot with a clean cloth. Mild soap
if needed. Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
can be used on light-coloured covers
with caution — test on a hidden area
first.
DO NOT use commercial stain removers, acetone, or
harsh household cleaners on your VelvetShield cover.
These will damage both the velvet and the waterproof
layer.

STORAGE
When storing your VelvetShield cover (for example,
during warmer months):
— Wash and dry completely before storing
— Fold loosely — do not compress tightly
— Store in a breathable bag or cotton pillowcase,
never in a sealed plastic bag (this traps moisture)
— Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
— Avoid storing under heavy items that could flatten
the velvet over time

MAINTAINING THE VELVET PILE
Over time, with use and washing, velvet fibres may
flatten slightly in areas of regular contact. This
is normal and completely reversible.
To restore the pile:
1. Lightly mist the affected area with clean water
1. Use a soft-bristle velvet brush or clean dry
toothbrush
1. Brush gently in one direction, following the
natural grain of the fabric
1. Allow to dry naturally
This takes less than five minutes and restores the
velvet to its original plush appearance.
